The number of diseases that can afflict mankind must number into the hundreds, if not the thousands. None are welcomed by the one to whom the disease attaches, but the diseases that steal a person’s brain and memories, are especially sinister. Most people who live six or seven decades experience memory loss of one magnitude or another. To have one’s memory erased of all loved ones, all friends, all emotions, all sensations, and all knowledge devastates caregivers and close friends beyond endurance. On the other hand, the one suffering total memory loss wakes up every day in a new day with no recollection of what went on before. There’s a blessing in that.
